Lockout/Tagout

What is Lockout/Tagout?

Lockout/Tagout is the process for controlling hazardous energy during the repair and maintenance of machines or equipment. It involves placing a lockout device, equipment, and a tag on energy-isolating equipment, ensuring that the equipment cannot be operated until the lockout device is removed.

 

Step 1

Preparing to shut down the installation

The responsible person must determine which sources of power are present and need to be controlled; determine which control method will be used.

Step 2

Notify all involved employees

The person responsible communicates the important information and notifies all the persons concerned.

Step 3

Power / equipment shutdown

If the system is active, it must be switched off in the normal way.

Step 4

Isolate system from hazardous energy

Isolates the power with interlocking equipment and provides complete lockout for the entire duration of the maintenance to prevent any possibility of the power being switched back on.

Step 5

Distribution of residual flow

Identify all stored current in cylinders, flywheels, springs, pneumatic or hydraulic systems and ensure that it is distributed.

Step 6

Apply Lockout Tagout

Lock the equipment and ensure that it cannot be removed and the machine cannot be switched on accidentally.

Step 7

Check lock

Check that the system is properly locked before you begin the work.
